Afterbliss - Separated at Birth by Popular Demand
Afterbliss is a Dublin-based indie rock band formed in 2019, known for their distinctive blend of melodic rock, hard-hitting riffs, and synth-infused pop elements. Drawing inspiration from renowned acts like Muse, Editors, Interpol, Manic Street Preachers, and The Killers, Afterbliss has carved out a unique sound in the Irish music scene.
The origins of this band trace back to 2018 when guitarist and synth player Alex Burcea and drummer Ally Pender, who had previously played together, recognised a strong creative synergy. They began crafting early songs and co-founded the group. The lineup was solidified with the addition of lead vocalist Evan Cassidy, guitarist James O'Gorman, and bassist Shane Waldron, each bringing diverse musical backgrounds that enriched the band's sound.
In November 2020, Afterbliss released their debut single, "Until Sunrise," which garnered positive attention from local and national Irish radio stations. They followed up with "Kiss & Tell" in February 2021 and "Remnants" in June 2021, both of which received extensive radio play across the UK and Ireland and were featured on various Spotify playlists. "Remnants" was notably highlighted as Track of the Day by Hotpress in June 2021.
The band released their debut EP, "Unknown Machine," on October 22, 2021, supporting it with a sold-out show at Whelan’s Upstairs Venue in Dublin. The EP was praised for its powerful choruses and engaging melodies, solidifying After-bliss's reputation as a compelling act in the indie music scene. Separated at Birth by Popular Demand is their debut album.
The album opens with the ambient track "Sonorous". As the name suggests, it guides the listener into the depth of sounds. Close your eyes and let them guide you. Well, to a certain extent, before the dynamic changes into more energetic. The guitar riffs effortlessly edge themselves into your head. The track ends too soon, you definitely want it to continue.
"Screaming Out Love" was released as a single prior to the entire album.
"Motions" gives the impression its tempo cannot be any faster. Impossible to sit still while listening to it. How appropriate to its title. The band giving it their all. And it shows.
"Shout It Out" belongs among the band's work we previously reviewed.
"Beautiful Mind" is a heartfelt ballad that slows the tempo down and makes the listener pay attention inward rather than on the arrangements, etc. Emotions are pouring out of every word.
The lead vocalist Evan Cassidy is showcasing his abilities throughout the record and we'd like to highlight his pronunciation skills. You understand every word he sings which is not that common in the genre. This surely earns some plus points in the overall impression.
It's quite hard to believe this is "only" a debut album. A very well put-together collection of songs from a relatively new band who keeps going from strength to strength and you feel they've been around for ages.
