Music from the Heart

Von Venn - Ghost (single)

Von Venn is the main project of songwriter Gary Cox. The name for the project/band derives from the concept that we become who we are based upon the intersection of life experiences gathered, people we meet and lessons we learn along the way. Similarly, the songs are an intersection of musical styles that influenced that Gary’s song writing, artists such as Radiohead, Jeff Buckley, The Blue Nile, John Martyn, John Lennon and many more. The result is primarily guitar centred songs that examine the intricacies of human nature and experiences. The aim is to craft something for everyone to connect with and explore at an emotional level. Hope, regret, loss, longing, nostalgia, attraction, love is all explored.

“Put it all in a blender, marinate in whiskey and it's probably Von Venn.”

Ghost is the first single off Von Venn’s upcoming debut album ‘Jeanie is Out

Gary provides main vocals, guitars,bBass, synth. The songs are enhanced by additional recruited musicians that contributed their experience, talent and skills to the Von Venn project and helped bring out the best in each of the tracks. Here is what he said about the track:

“The bones of “Ghost” was written and recorded in a home session on an old Yamaha recording system in 2021. We were in lockdown and I was feeling particularly reflective. I brought the track to Soundcaster Studios to flesh it out. The addition of second vocals gave that atmospheric vibe I was looking for and the drums gave the energy to drive the song along. The song deals with loss, a haunting by someone who was once dear to you but now gone...and how do you handle that…the lingering memories that have become part of you? Although the track is written from a personal perspective, I’m sure it has something that everyone can relate to! A good song can be cheaper than therapy!”

Powerful anthemic track features full band sound and deep lyrics that resonate because we all have been haunted by the ghosts of past relationships. There is a nostalgic element in the arrangement but deep down there's something irresistible about a track like this. Goes beneath your skin and you notice it's there once you keep singing the catchy phrases over and over again. Gary Cox's vocal is inviting and simply draws you in.

"The little signs

That make me feel you’re still around today

But in a different way"
