Music from the Heart

Matthew Devereux - House Devil

Dublin born Matthew Devereux has been actively making music since 1990, beginning with the formation of the much-loved band The Pale who immediately captivated audiences with their energetic live shows which quickly led to a bidding war between numerous record labels battling to sign them up.

Eventually signing with A&M Records and releasing their debut album Here’s One We Made Earlier in 1992, the album featured the classic Irish singles ‘Butterfly’ and ‘Dogs With No Tails’ which peaked at No. 51 in the UK Singles chart in June 1992. The band received Hot Press awards in 1992 for Best Single (‘Butterfly‘) and Best Album Production (Here’s One We Made Earlier). They have toured the world extensively and have made a dozen albums to date and recently celebrated their 30th anniversary in the music industry and released a career spanning best of collection entitled Paleanthology. Devereux also released an album of instrumental ambient electronic music in 2003 entitled Tap, Tap, Tap.

Already known as the dynamic force of The Pale, Devereux now presents the other side of his creativity. Intimate, more gentle, darker and haunting yet still containing razor sharp lyrics.

The album opens with a track where the title speaks for itself - Haunted By. Intense and dark as it gets, centered around Devereux's spoken word, this song sets the tone. Grabs you and throws you right in the middle of emotions, philosophy and self-reflection. As an existential line in the songs says "I've grown a little philosophical but at least I've grown."

Knock Me Out, one of the highlights, starts out with a dramatic piano. There's a perfect balance within the track. Despite the somber instrumentation the lyrics have somewhat positive outlook of being true to yourself, not changing just because someone wants you to.

We continue to explore Devereux's inner going on as we move further through the tracklist. His vocal is unmistakable, recognized after just a few seconds. The simple, quieter arrangements suit him and let his decades of experience in the music industry shine through.

In Still Life Model we discover the softer side of the artist, gentle, consoling, taking us by the hand and calming our fears and worries down. Devereux presents himself as a passionate human being who has seen a lot throughout the years.

Candy is a snaphot of experimenting with electronica. Scarse lyrics give way to the ambient instrumentation.

Uncanny Valley is a journey. Journey of discovery. Hypnotic track where Matthew's vocal sounds like from outer space. What will you find out once you dive deep into yourself?

With this release, a seasoned artist Matthew Devereux allows us to explore his abilities further. And invites us to get to know him better.
