Luke Clerkin is a two time SCC Song Writing competition winning singer-songwriter from Dublin, Ireland. He has been playing and releasing music for the last 5 years. His music has gained international airplay and support, whilst also topping the Irish Singer Songwriter Charts on multiple occasions. Luke is known mostly for playing over 250 gigs in 2015, as a way of honing his craft. Since then he has headlined famous Dublin venues such as Whelan’s, The Workman’s Club, and The Button Factory. His music has brought him all over the world, with multiple tours of Germany, as well as festival slots in America, The UK, and Ireland.
Luke’s 2018 Charity Single ‘Take Back The City’ saw Luke bring his passion for change into his music, as he aimed to highlight the ongoing housing crisis and raise money for homelessness. Luke performed the song in front of over 10,000 people at the National Housing Protest in December 2018. After returning from finishing a scholarship in the illustrious Popakademie in Germany, Luke released his second EP, What Little Time We Have, in July of 2020. The EP spawned 3 singles that gained critical success and airplay all over the world including plays on Spin 1038/South West, BBC Northern Ireland, and Red FM. 2020 also saw him complete an apprenticeship with Ed Sheeran’s mentor and Nizlopi frontman, Luke Concannon. Following the critical and radio success of his 2021 singles, ‘Lost in Translation’, the follow up jaako remix and 'Normal People', Luke is set to release 'Fall in Line' this February. This song will see Luke's music delve further into pop music territory, and will mark the 4th release from his collaboration with jaako.
As well as music, Luke has won multiple awards for his activism work including the Rotary International Young Citizen award in 2015. Luke is the founder of musical fundraisers, The Never Alone Collective and Co-Founder of mental health awareness group, Action for Suicide Prevention.
‘Fall in Line’ was recorded remotely between Dublin and Berlin with producer jaako. It will be their 4th release together since the pair began collaborating in late 2020. Previous releases have gained critical and radio success getting support from Hot Press, Spin, RTE and BBC amongst others. Luke has also announced a headline show at The Cobblestone on February 24th. It will be his first headliner since before the pandemic. Tickets can be bought here
Talking about the release of ‘Fall in Line’, Luke said ‘This song explores the contemplation of doing something you shouldn’t and imagining the consequences of that action. More specifically, it’s about someone who is contemplating getting involved with a person who is already in a relationship. They imagine the heartbreak that it would cause for the other person in the relationship, and the feeling of guilt and shame that would surround the cheating couple.’
Talking about The Cobblestone gig, Luke said "It’ll be over two years since I did my last headline show, two years of false dawns, but it has also been two years of personal and creative growth for me. I’ve written some of my best music over this time, and I’m so excited to be able to show it to people. I’ll be joined by some amazing special guests for an unforgettable night of song and spoken word. Keep an eye on my socials for the special guest announcements, you will not be disappointed!"
Relationship viewed from all angles is a frequent theme in Clerkin's songs. You can feel the strong desire to make this one work. Yet there's also a moment of truth ("the backseat driver in my mind reminds me not to touch"). Honesty and absolute sincerity are his trademarks, you don't doubt what you hear. Combined with a catchy melody, Fall in Line is Clerkin's most pop offering to date yet it's clear he found his style and it suits him and enables him to experiment more.
"They say to fix it if it's broken, is that the same with trust?"
