Music from the Heart

Cormac O Caoimh - Where The World Begins

Cork's very own Cormac O Caoimh has established himself well on the music scene as one of the greatest melodists you could come across. He has supported Damien Rice, Declan O' Rourke, Josh Rouse, Mark Geary, Nick Kelly, Miles Hunt and Damien Dempsey  to name just a few. His solo live performances vary between fast and frenetic acoustic guitar playing, slower tunes heavily influenced by a classical guitar playing background and jazz influenced pop tunes. O Caoimh has released five albums to date, with the latest, Where The World Begins, being the sixth.

O Caoimh's gift for melodies is evident right from the first seconds of the opening My Little Buddha. In addition, the lyrics aren't just accompaniement to the sounds. They form the core of all  tracks, demand attention. In the opening track O Caoimh is encouraging the listener to follow their desires "All you want right now / You have, it's now "

A Good Place For You is one of the lyrically intense tracks found on the album. There's darkness within and the listener is manouvered to reflect on what they hear. Who wouldn't when they hear "  Why havent I song this sooner?
What is it I've been afraid of?
I didn't want it down on paper
Hiding behing vague and vague
"

The follow up Stay Calm brightens overall mood with a positive attitude and a message of getting up after falling down and moving on and forward after a defeat. As the lyrics say "Breath , breath in
Breathe out again
Count to ten
"

O Caoimh's relatable lyrics resonate, wake up the senses. Jealousy stops you in your tracks. Not only because of the subject but the combination of all elements forming this striking composition. A mellow piece, more spoken than sung, feels even more intimate than the rest on the album. The words cut to the core again. We all have been jealous for whatever reason, haven't we?

There is a World is an invitation. Invitation to escape from everyday routine to a place where we feel happy.  It's also an invitation to enjoy life itself   "Live like there is only now."

There Must Be a Catch a is a playful jazzy piece. Lovely piano forms a backround to another slightly optimistic track trying to maintain the good outlook on life, being grateful for all the good that comes along.

Cormac O Caoimh is an architect. Every song on this collection has a solid base on top of which he builds structures that play with our imagination, affect our emotions, provoke our thoughts.

Where The World Begins was named RTÉ Radio 1 Album of the Week and also recommended by RTÉ Lyric presenter Marty Whelan.
